Moving is overwhelming no matter how well you plan for it. And you can find more than enough articles about how to prepare for your move. It can make the situation even more stressful because you just want to know what will work best for your move. You might get frustrated and think, “I just want someone to tell me the top five things to do on moving day!” Well, you’re in luck, as we’ve compiled our top 5 tips to get you through moving day.
5 Tips to Get You Through Moving Day
Pack a Moving Day Essentials Box
Arguably the most important thing to have with you on moving day–aside from keys, important documents, etc.–is your moving essentials box. This box contains everything you need to have a smooth first evening and morning in your home. It’s filled with things like a change of clothes, pajamas, and toiletries. Add anything to your box or bag you don’t want to rummage through boxes for. If you need help getting started, check out our detailed walkthrough on how to create a moving essentials box.
Make a List of Things You Need to Do on Moving Day
Before you even start packing, make a list of last minute things you need to do before locking up your old home for the last time. Did you finish wiping down the bathroom before leaving? What about the corner behind your desk you didn’t realize needed dusting until the movers picked up the desk? Did you completely empty the freezer and check underneath the bathroom sink?
You’ll be tempted to just say, “Oh, I’ll remember to take care of that before leaving.” But moving day is always more hectic than you think it will be. Don’t take any chances forgetting last minute things that need to be done and possibly risk losing some of your deposit if you’re renting. Write it down. Complete the list before leaving. And thank your past self for your thoughtfulness.
Prepare Snacks and Water
A quick, takeout lunch is probably your best option for moving day. But what about those moments when you need a quick bite to fill your stomach? Keep easy to consume, filling, non-messy snacks on hand, like granola bars, apples, or bananas. Have a few snacks with protein to help keep you fuller longer.
Along with that, have plenty of water bottles at the ready or reusable water bottles you can refill. Even if it’s not a sweltering 100 degrees Fahrenheit, you still need to stay hydrated on moving day.
Have Someone Watch Your Kids or Pets
If you have younger children or any pets that like to roam, like a cat or dog, ask a friend or family member or hire a babysitter to watch them until you’re ready to go to your new home or after you’ve unpacked some essentials in your new home. You won’t have to worry about keeping your kids occupied or making sure your pets are safe and sound. If your pet is much more comfortable in their crate, they can stay there as long as the door is locked. Don’t risk your furry friend sneaking out the front door while the movers are trying to load or unload the truck.
Conduct One Last Walk Through
Before you leave your old home, complete one last walk through to make sure nothing was missed. Your movers will do their best to make sure everything is on the truck, but you know the place better than they do. Take one more glance and peek into every cupboard to ensure nothing is left behind and all ceiling lights and appliances are turned off.
At your new home, before the movers leave, take a look in the back of the truck. Make sure all of your belongings are off and in your home. There might be a loose curtain rod you forgot to pack away before the movers arrived. It could end up with some of the movers tools for safe keeping, blend in, and be forgotten about. One last check never hurts.
