What to Pack in Your Moving Essentials Box

If you’ve moved before, you’ve experienced the chaotic first night of living in your new home. The bedsheets are in one box, the towels in another. Your pajamas are nowhere to be found, and while you already ate the takeout you planned for dinner, your kids are now asking for a snack, but all you can find are pots and pans and dried spices. A moving essentials box will counteract all of this chaos. This box (or boxes) will contain all of the items you’ll need to have a good first night’s sleep in your new home so you’re ready to unpack and get organized the next day.

What’s in a moving essentials box? Whatever you and your family need to help facilitate and speed along unpacking the rest of your house. It’s the items you use every day. Start making a list of what you use throughout the day that you must have access to on your first night and morning in your new home. Once you’ve packed up your box(es) be sure to label them so you know to take them in your own vehicle on moving day. If you need some help getting your list together, start by reading through our list of what to pack in your moving essentials box.

The above list is ideal for both short and long distance moves. However, if you’re moving across the state or across multiple states, you might want to have a few more items packed in your moving essentials boxes, just in case the movers are delayed. (It’s unfortunate, but it can happen.)

Items for a Long Distance Move

  • Medium Pot, Pan, and Baking Dish
  • Wooden Spoon and Spatula
  • Non-Perishable Food for Meals (i.e. pasta, pasta sauce, cans of soup, oatmeal)
  • Jewelry and Other Valuable Items

What you need to have access to immediately after your move can vary drastically from person to person. This list is a great starting point, but don’t use it in lieu of thinking about what you use daily. You don’t want to end up in your new home not knowing where something you need is.
