An outdoor storage unit saves you time by being able to drive right up to it and load and unload with ease. The downside to outdoor storage is susceptibility to the weather. There is no climate control, so there’s a much higher chance of water leaking in and potentially ruining whatever you’re storing inside. There’s also not much protection from excessive cold or heat.
Indoor Storage Units
Indoor storage units often look like outdoor storage units, but they are inside a building. This erases the concern for protection against the weather, and you don’t have to worry about unloading in snow or rain. Climate controlled storage units are very similar to indoor storage units. They are laid out the same way, but you can control the temperature of the unit. This type of storage is useful if you’re looking for long term storage of electronics or furniture that could potentially warp from the weather. These units can be a bit pricier than a regular indoor storage unit, but it will be worth it in the long run if you’d prefer having peace of mind knowing your items are protected from any sort of temperature change.

Portable storage containers—you probably know them as PODs—are the easiest, most efficient types of storage. You choose the size of the POD you need and the company will deliver it to your location. They can even drop if off right in your driveway. You load it up, completely avoiding having to load things into a vehicle and unload at the storage destination. If you’re looking for short term storage during a home renovation, the container can stay in your driveway for as long as you need. If you’re utilizing it for a move, once it’s filled, the storage company will pick up the storage container. They’ll take care of storing it at their facility until you need it. Then they’ll deliver it to your new location when you’re ready for it.
Portable storage units are perfect for loading and unloading convenience. However, you can’t access them as easily as an indoor or outdoor storage unit if you need something you put inside. You would have to schedule a drop of off the unit, even if it was only for one thing. And that would come with an extra cost as well.
Temporary Storage
If you’re closing on your current house on one day and your new home on the next, you won’t be able to move everything out and in on the same day. You’ll need overnight storage. You might have a similar situation, but you only need a few days, weeks, or a month of storage.
